@kerrywsmyth I recall them having to lift, especially after the reconfiguration in 1993. I recall in 1994, the Penske with the pushrod engines definitely had to as well. They do have to even today in traffic at least, not on their own though… at least with a good setup.
@iRacerMatt 1992 was the last *real* Indy 500. Now it’s just a dumbed down version of stock car racing. I say ‘dumbed down’ because in the current set-up you can keep the throttle at 100% through all 4 turns. That’s not racing, thats worse than a bad video game. They are totally stock though. Every car and engine are indistinguishable and the restrictions make it all identical and slow.
@speedjpo Every year she has had teammates, they have found the Top 5 at one time or another during the season. She’s never finished in the Top 10 or on the lead lap. She clearly needs her license revoked (if Brian Brainfart finally realises she’s an amateur in a professional racing championship); she’s no better than King Hiro.
Man! this was like 15 years ago and now this year yesterday Paul Tracy was stupid enough to withdraw his qualify time he’s should of started dead last 33rd gosh I’m very glad Tony Kanaan barely made it in I was thinking of oh no not the 1995 fiasco again and this time it happen to Milka Duno she clearly needs to move to a good team not that Infamous Dale Coyne racing she must feel pretty that she’s not in this year running of the Indy 500 and Paul Tracy KV Racing made a stupid move withdraw time
@m4rkhutz
You right. I sat in section H last year and had to watch the cars crawl down pit lane with this stupid pit speed limit they have nowadays.
To think that the pole speed was 233+ in 1996 and in 2009 it’s 224+…then the Speedway and IRL are shocked that NOBODY even shows up anymore for pole and qualifying days.
know what you mean . . . the racing may be great even better than Formula One but the race commentary is a snore fest . . . bring Paul Page or Bob Varsha or even the NASCAR guys . . . that would spice up the show . . .
I missed the days when they had Marlboro in their cars. I started watching racing when I was 8 1/2 in 2003, I was 9 that year. I like the old stuff. Also the nitro turbo noise.
i know one thing i wouldve done to increase speed. idve taken the barge boards off the front radiator openings. they were VERY Draggy in the air. worth at least 2 or three tenths.
Well, if we follow the increase of speed at the time, and without any rule change like in the mid 90’s…It could had been near that… We were at 241.426 mph in 2000 at Fontana, even with the rule change that make lose 10 mph in average
@DBoy02 I would… If I could have a faster engine and a suspension derived from the DP01/DP09, because it could be part of an unkillable machine. The only problem the G-Force GF09 had is: when you are in traffic at high speed, it is unstable… But it was know as a car a bit better aerodynamically when all alone.

My god!!! Just look how fast they used to go! That is impressive. Today’s indycars blow.

Add Paul Tracy with The Penskes downfall and Bobby Rahal as the key drivers to get bumped from the 500.

to watch this video for a few minutes is more valuable than all FIRL did between 1996 until nowadays

Being a Little Al fan, it was devastating for me watching him fail to make the field

I remember this live. I couldn’t believe Penske missed the race.
Please keep posting races from the 90s!!

If CART kept control of the series, who knows what would happen?
July 30th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
@coolerindy….i agree with you….this is the real F-Indy car….the “original”……this engine have a beautiful sound…V-8 turbo…Ford, Mercedes and Honda…

YES PLEASE!! I can’t STAND him!
July 30th, 2010 at 8:30 pm
The saddest day ever in the history of Penske racing, the flags at the raceshop in Reading PA should’ve been at halfmast…
July 30th, 2010 at 9:20 pm
Whatever arm you can twist at ESPN to bring back Paul Page, do it. Don’t subject me to another season of Marty Reid.
July 30th, 2010 at 10:10 pm
Oh how I miss that beautiful sound.

I remember watching this when I was kid. . . Couldn’t believe it- the great Marlboro Team Penske failed. . .Failed to make the feild. Unbelievable.
